Match report: CMP FC 5-2 Inter Galatic

Both long ball and pace reigned supreme on Sunday afternoon as an early blitz of goals from CMP overpowered Inter Galactic, even if the 5-2 scoreline was a little flattering.

Guy Sanders and Tom Schuyt nabbed the doubles early on for CMP, while Jake Roberts of Inter completed the hat trick of braces with his two second half goals. CMP could have made six had Brad de la Cour put away his penalty, but his shot would instead emulate CMP’s second half struggles.

The goals:

Guy Sanders (CMP, 10th minute) Inter Galactic left Sanders unmarked during a right sided throw in, and with no one in position to stop him the recent returnee ran into acres of space and slammed it home with power from distance.

Tom Schuyt (CMP, 14th minute) The throw in would again prove to be Inter’s downfall. Taken quickly after the ball went out, an excellent long distance throw allowed Schuyt to run down the left hand side and slot it in past keeper Phil Connor in a wonderful finish.

Tom Schuyt (CMP, 20th minute) An interception in the midfield allowed CMP to counter whilst their opponents were off guard, meaning the defence were playing catch up while the CMP midfielder lobbed a beautiful ball in for an entirely unmarked Schuyt to double his tally.

Guy Sanders (CMP, 26th minute) CMP showed magic was possible by creating something out of nothing. A midfield battle was ongoing and it really didn’t look like either side held the advantage. Yet all of a sudden a long ball appeared out of thin air and Sanders was free. He only needed the one touch, sending a fantastic chip past the keeper.

Matt Bouzaid (CMP, 58th minute) Both long balls and braces had seen their moments, now it was the missed interception’s time in the sun. When a defender failed to seize the ball the CMP wing cut inside from the left, where another missed interception following the cross meant Bouzaid had the easiest finish in the world.

Jake Roberts (Inter, 60th minute) The long ball once again was proven to be king as a kick from inside Inter territory looped up to bounce in front of a running Roberts, whose header pushed it above the goalie and into the net.

Jake Roberts (Inter, 77th minute) The later in the game, the more ascendant Inter were, and Roberts' second goal would display that. A cross arrived at the far post following a good Galactic spell, where Roberts’ tiny tap in brought another one back for Inter.

The pivotal moment:

With the first half draining away, Roberts in a sign of things to come stepped up. Despite being double teamed and shoved around by the CMP defence, Roberts went solo through the area and somehow made it to a shooting position. His strike was almost true. In heartbreaking fashion for Inter it somehow bounced off of the post.

The stars:

CMP - Guy Sanders A constant headache for the Inter Galactic defence with a brace to boot. Schuyt can also lay claim to this prize, but Sanders just edges him out since Schuyt could have had a hat trick but spurned one too many opportunities.

Inter Galatic - Jake Roberts Inter would be a far poorer team without Roberts. The striker was very much the lynchpin for Galatic’s attacks - literally everything went through him.

The comments:
Guy Sanders, CMP striker:
“This was my first game in a few weeks and only my second overall. Given we got dicked like 6-2 last time it felt good to play, good to get a run in with the boys, and good to win a game for a change. I was going for the hat trick - two early goals meant I was up for all the corners and everything, but unfortunately they just didn’t fall to me. Would have liked to take the penalty but it was Brad’s [de la Cour] workmate in goal and he wanted to score past him so I let Brad have it.”

Shaun Beales, Inter midfielder: It was a tough game since we started off with the wrong formation, but surprisingly enough the second half went a lot better for us: we changed from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3, CMP took their foot off the pedal, and we were arguably the better side. Admittedly they were the better team overall, but we just had too many chances which we didn’t bury.

The bad boys: N/A

The meaning: Missing some of the stars from their 13-1 thrashing of Tim’s Boys, CMP proved they are the real deal. This win moves them up to fourth in the ladder, the highest of any team on six points. Inter’s success against the Unicycles last week remains their sole success for now, as they lie seventh in the standings.

The future: Both teams are at Alex Moore on Sunday the 8th, with CMP playing The Mandalorians first at 10am, while Inter challenge WCU in the subsequent game at 11:40.
